There is a carbon-fiber battery pack inside the left and right lights, with the same type of rechargeable lithium battery cells used in laptops and electric cars. The replaceable battery pack provides an estimated 18 hours of typical use between charges. There is an LED indicator for battery level in the vehicle.

Ten years ago, SailTimer Inc. made the first-ever sailboat wind sensor that could transmit to smartphones/apps. Now we are moving some of the same wireless and sensing technology into DOT-approved LED trailer lights.

In the context of LED ribbons, or LED strips, it’s important to understand how the SPI protocol facilitates the control and manipulation of the LEDs on the strip. Here’s a breakdown of how SPI is used with LED ribbons:

In the vehicle, use zip ties to attach one sensor to the turn signal (as shown below) and the other to the back of the brake pedal. Plug those in to the power or OBD socket with the included connectors, and you are ready to go.

These are the best you can buy. With low-cost boat trailer lights, the quality can be amazingly bad. The example in this photo was rusty after only two trips down the boat ramp. Those cheap lights have slots for the mounting bolts, and bounced off the bolts with road bumps (and had to be held on with duct tape!). You don’t want that. The LEDs are controlled by shift-registers that are chained up and down the strip so you can shorten or lengthen the strip, Only 1 digital out pin is required to send data. The PWM is built into each LED-chip so once the colours are setup no further communication is required to the strip and it will continue control/PWM the LEDs for you,

More than 3/4 of all recreational boats (power and sail) are under 26 feet and towable. But trailer lights have hardly changed in 100 years; the wiring is time-consuming to install and not very reliable. A perfect target for wireless innovation.
