The biggest change here is pricing. Our customers are demanding lower prices and we're also finding the focus is on immediate cost savings, as opposed to the total cost of ownership across the lifespan of the product. Customers also seem to be more concerned about Australian industry as a whole — they like to hear we're an Australian manufacturer and our products are Australian made. They are also pleased to see that in buying Australian made you can get high quality at the same price as many imported products.

Then it's having a supplier who listens to what the customer actually needs, versus what they think they need. We take a specialist approach and add value to our customer conversations through the depth of our product knowledge. There are plenty of generalist suppliers in our industry and we often have customers seeking our assistance simply for that fresh approach, which can often save them money.

Again, these are factors which are having an impact across most industries, but I have to come back to the drop in commodity prices, coupled with the falling Aussie dollar. Iron ore and coal, together with oil and gas, heavily drive industry in WA and Queensland, and as we see these projects slow down, there is a knock-on effect through the supply chain. We're seeing the tighter cash flow and increased focus on efficiency throughout our customers' operations. This drives the demands I spoke of earlier in relation to pricing and transparency. On the upside, the weakening Australian dollar works in our favour as it allows us to maintain fair and consistent pricing, and increases the competitiveness (and attractiveness) of Australian-made products.

From £10.92 To £19.86

Our biggest challenge isn't unique to our industry, but is something that's affecting most industries in Australia. Sustained lower commodity prices, together with tighter trading conditions, are impacting the way we're all doing business. Add the falling Aussie dollar to this and we have an environment where customers are tightening their spend and being a lot more conscious of how they are procuring goods and services.

We're also seeing customers demanding more transparency across the supply chain. They want to know their equipment has been manufactured in a workplace with fair work conditions and the raw materials have been sourced diligently and ethically. They want to know that products have been independently tested and will do exactly what they say they will do. Fortunately, being an Australian manufacturer means we manage our entire supply chain and can meet these demands.

From £6.99 To £31.99

Because of this, price increases applied to imported products are impacting how procurement teams work and adding pressure to their bottom line. Fortunately, our predominantly Australian manufacturing base is immune to exchange rates and we continue to invest in our manufacturing and R&D facilities to leverage competitiveness as an Australian supplier.

Gas & Explosive Warning Signs: Buying GuideIf you work in an industry where gas and explosions are potential hazards, you will be well aware of the need to protect employees and visitors from the harm that they can inflict. Gas and explosive signs can be used to make sure that areas at risk of gas and explosions are clearly labelled to protect everyone on your premises from injuries or even death. There are a number of options in our range of gas and explosive signs to best suit your requirements, including a choice of material. Choose rigid plastic for a durable sign that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, or vinyl, which can be attached to most smooth, clean surfaces but is particularly ideal for curved surfaces such as gas cylinders. See our guide to signs materials for more information on these and other materials available. Don't forget, some signs will require specific sign fixings depending on the size, style and location of use.All of our signs feature the well-known hazard triangle with the relevant gas or explosion symbol. Some include the letters EX in the triangle to show that an explosive atmosphere is present at the corresponding ATEX category.Others simply feature the easily recognisable explosion symbol. For gas cylinder storage areas consider using signs that display the image of an exploding cylinder. One of the biggest dangers in an area at risk of gas and explosions is that of fire, which could be triggered by smoking of cigarettes or the presence of naked flames. Make sure that everyone knows not to smoke or have naked flames in these areas by using the appropriate prohibition sign.Gas and explosions may remain a risk, but with good management, the risk is very low. Displaying gas and explosive signs in the appropriate locations in your business premises will prove to everyone that the risk is being well managed and will help prevent accidents as part of your health and safety policy. You can create a sign that is specific to your needs, while still ensuring that it complies with UK and EU signs regulations. The regulations surrounding the use of signs to clearly label hazardous areas can be confusing. However, you can shop with confidence at Seton. All of our signs comply with current EU and UK legislation, so when you buy a hazard warning sign from us, you can feel reassured that you are fulfilling your health and safety obligations. No Room for Complacency on Explosive SignsSites where explosions and gas leaks are potentially possible have become much safer thanks to legislation and rigorous trade standards on this topic. Yet evidence suggests that the rate of UK gas explosions doubled in five years to 2021. Those figures include both residential and workplace incidents. This adds urgency to the need to source compliant gas and explosive signage. Who Uses an Explosive Sign Supplier? There are workplaces where the risk of an explosion is obvious, such as quarries, demolition companies, factories producing chemicals, laboratories and any kind of mining operation, including gas and oil rigs. However, it is not just these companies that need explosive signage, as many other workplaces store flammable substances or explosive gases on their premises.Facilities managers may need to consider storage of large amounts of cleaning supplies, for example, as this may also be a recommended location for an explosive hazard sign.Healthcare providers that store oxygen supplies are also mandated to use recommended explosive signage, and in particular a compressed oxygen sign to indicate where extra care is needed.Agricultural enterprises are another type of worksite that needs to be vigilant in using risk of explosion signs – for example, danger propane signs for buildings heated by this gas to house livestock and horticulture.Best Practice Tips for Explosive SignageIt all starts with a thorough risk assessment of your site and mapping out exactly where Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) rules apply, or there is an additional risk of explosion due to leaks and spills. This should take into account not just locations with a clear requirement for an explosive sign, such as storage rooms and cabinets. Look for places where hazardous substances are used, or transferred from tanks to equipment, for example.Do your consignments of gas tanks and potentially explosive materials get unloaded at a particular part of your warehouse? Gas & explosive signs could be important there, alongside your informational safety signage on how to handle these inventory items properly.Even somewhere such as a laboratory may need to consider erecting a danger explosive atmosphere sign where volatile chemicals are temporarily stored or used. The trick is to source a range of different safety signs that manage explosive risks, and preferably ones that are versatile enough to fit to various surfaces. If you need signage that communicates risk quickly, or for non-English speakers, make sure that you use the universally accepted risk of explosion symbol on your hi-vis safety signs.Staff training and risk of explosion signsOne of the key factors in keeping your employees safe if they work in environments where explosive signage is the norm is to make sure that they take the risks involved seriously on a daily basis. For example, this may demand regular refreshers on why an explosive hazard sign is needed, and what to do if they have concerns or spot a procedural problem. Do they know the indications that an explosion is possible, such as the smell of sulphur, or hissing or whistling sounds near gas?How do they check storage arrangements for potentially explosive materials and ensure that your danger of explosion sign hasn’t been obscured by racking and other inventory?Thorough training and reminders on this topic – along with your gas & explosive signs – help to keep your staff, visitors and contractors safe, and protect your business premises, equipment and productivity.
