The TS&S Division is currently installing a new, state-of-the-art ATMS that will better serve motorists, transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists throughout Miami-Dade County. The County’s new traffic management system will comply with industrywide data communications protocol which will allow the County to support smart city initiatives such as two-way communication between vehicles and traffic signals.  This trailblazing project includes the upgrade of the County's ATMS central software, replacement of traffic signal controllers and additional detection systems at signalized intersections.  The enhanced system will use algorithms to process data collected from motorized and transit vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists to optimize mobility for all transportation system users.

Miami-Dade County’s TMC hosts one of the country's largest centralized traffic signal control systems. The original system was installed in 1975 and set the standard by which most computerized signal systems were installed throughout the country. In the 2000s, the County’s traffic signal control system was upgraded to an ATMS which provided additional tools that enabled county engineers to enhance vehicular traffic flow.
