Phone scam!!!! Be a #hanguphero Please be aware of a phone scam that is reportedly circulating in the area. The scam involves the caller identifying themselves as an employee for a local Law Enforcement agency. For some of the calls, the ID says "No caller ID". For others, it may be a "spoofed" local number. The caller says that you have pending criminal charges and/or a warrant for your arrest for some obscure reason (for example, you have a federal warrant, or you missed jury duty). They will try scare tactics and get you send them payment over the phone to “take care of” the warrant. This is NOT how legitimate government business is done. Keep these tips in mind: • Simply hang up. (if they give you a call back number, DON’T call it back!) • Never give personal information (even your phone number) to a stranger over the phone (on received calls). • Never send money, gift card information, itunes card information, or ANY other type of payment to a stranger over the phone. • If you have questions about the call, hang up and call a family member or trusted friend so you can ask their opinion. You can also call Hoover PD Dispatch non-emergency at 205-822-5300. If they say you have a warrant, you can contact Hoover Municipal Court directly to verify: http://www.hooveral.org/237/Recall-Procedure You can report scam phone calls directly to the FTC at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1 You can also report to the federal Treasury Inspector General: https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml #hooverpd #themoreyouknow #communitypolicing

I have received questions about the heavy police presence in your area last night. Here is what I can say: We assisted the ALEA (State Troopers) and Vestavia PD on a vehicle that refused to stop. Any further information would have to come from ALEA or Vestavia. As I have said many, many times, if anyone has a police-related question, all you have to do is ask me. That way you get info directly from me/us, and not speculation from folks that might not know. My office number is 205-739-6050, or email is brian.hale@hooveralabama.gov - Officer Hale.

FBI warns of “sextortion” Parents, please take the time to read this. Children and young people can easily fall victim to online and social media predators. Sextortion is a type of scam where someone threatens to share explicit photos or videos of you unless you pay them money. They may have gotten these photos or videos from a hacked account or by tricking you into sending them yourself. If you are being extorted, do not pay the money. This will only encourage the scammer to continue. Instead, report the scam to the police and to the website or app where the extortion attempt took place. Here are some tips to help you avoid being a victim of sextortion: • Be careful about what personal information you share online. • Do not send explicit photos or videos of yourself to anyone you do not know and trust. • Be suspicious of any messages that ask for money or personal information. • Report any suspicious activity to the police. If you have been a victim of sextortion, there are resources available to help you. You can contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678) or the CyberTipline at https://www.missingkids.org/cybertipline .
